I desperately needed to see some of India and where better to start than “Dilli” as the locals call their beloved capital Delhi. I had no choice; I had to quickly learn Hindi to speak. I was due to leave in under 12 weeks, and definitely starting to panic more than just a little.
Whenever I travel anywhere I make a point of (at the very least) learning the basics of the language spoken in the country I am going to visit. For example, the Pleasantries and manners in order to be able to converse with the locals without upsetting them. Then there’s the time of day, the days of the week, the weather, numbers, directions, you know all of the things that can make a trip more eye opening to us travellers.
Because of the way the language is written I really did imagine that learning to speak Hindi was going to be one of the most difficult tasks I had ever set myself, I was in for a very pleasant surprise, I began to discover the pure joy and simplicity that lay ahead of me, especially in comparison to some of the many other languages I have touched on.
I not only discovered the ease in picking up the basics, but that the Hindi language is a very logical rhythmical one that totally drew me in to needing to learn more and more. I decided to learn to speak Hindi online, and although I am now capable of writing a little, it never was an ambition let alone a consideration to become fluent in Hindi grammar.
So, let’s not stray too far away from the main topic in question, how was I going to learn Hindi to speak?
I am about to let you in on a few secrets as to how I went about Hindi language learning, from the very start, knowing not one word, to here and now, where I can most easily hold up my end of a conversation on just about anything.
