It is said that India is the most diverse geographically, culturally and linguistically, this is taking into account the continent of Africa. The experience cannot be described in enough detail to prepare you for what you are going to encounter when visiting India.

This magical, ancient land is a place many people have totally fallen in love with, me being one of them. I intended to have a brief visit so that I could say “I’ve done that” I’ve been there”, but I fell in love with everything Indian and so far it has been 4 ‘more than brief’ visits, in all I have spent over a year there now and I’m going back for more shortly.

I enjoy looking closely at the way other people live.

In India in particular there is such wonder to be seen in the ethnic cultures, historic cities, palaces and monuments, a multitude of colors and smells, beautiful coastlines with the immense Himalayas and their snowy caps acting as the final backdrop, it is a complete sensory overload each time I go. If this strikes a chord within you, then seriously you have to visit India.

As I have said in my previous posts, India has a number of different languages and dialects but you don’t have to master them all to learn to speak Hindi quickly, as you travel from state to state you will discover this.

You may be really pleased with yourself for picking up a phrase in one city only to find that you are not understood in another, but if you are prepared for this you will be able to adapt with small variations to get yourself understood, this is the main objective here, not to become fluent overnight but to be able to travel.

Hindi is the national language, so learn Hindi basics and you will get on great. There are many English speakers in the cities, you wont find it hard to communicate there but It would be best (as always when traveling to any new country) to get to grips with the mere basics of the language, in case of emergencies.

The pleasantries and manners are the bare bones of any language, if you want the local people to pay you any kind of respect, and to give you credit for being anywhere close to intelligent then you will need to try to learn some.

Learn Hindi To Speak – Quickly, Easily and Fluently

As the day of my departure for Delhi grew nearer and nearer I was getting more excited every day, but also a little worried that with such a short time to prepare I wouldn’t manage to learn Hindi to speak quickly and competently enough.

I went out to the bookstore and invested in a couple of Hindi language learning books and courses on CD, but somehow just couldn’t quite get to grips with them. I really wanted to learn enough Hindi vocabulary to make my trip more interesting, to be able to converse with new friends easily. But despite my motivation there never seemed enough time to get deeply into the books, and make sense of the lessons.

I found that the CD course was just badly planned and uninspiring, I looked up some Hindi tutorials online but they were jumbled and disorganized.

Just as I had begun to accept that I simply wouldn’t be able to learn Hindi in time for my trip I had a Hindi audio and software course recommended to me that turned out to be exactly what I needed.

With the lessons structured so that you can jump right in and be speaking simple Hindi phrases in no time at all, it’s based around the things you really need to learn for everyday activities and polite conversation. The best thing was that not only did the course give me a great start on learning to speak Hindi but because the main component is audio files for the mp3 player I could take it with me and continue improving my Hindi all the time I was there.

There’s also a software package to download and run on your computer, the Audio Learning game is great for building up your vocabulary, and confidence in recognizing the Hindi words you’ve learned, and how Hindi grammar is used in normal speech.

Even away from home you can access the online content, and contact the support for anything you particularly need, which I certainly made good use of while I was out there.

The course has all the written content in both the Romanized Hindi (English letters) and in the Modern Standard Hindi Script (Devanagari), so for speed I learned first in the English letter version, which helps in learning pronunciation too.  Later on I began learning the Devanagari script, which isn’t as difficult as it first appears, and is so beautiful that reading it is a pleasure even when you first begin to learn.

I’m so glad that I did learn basic Hindi before I went, people really do treat you differently when you’ve made the effort, and it made my visit so much more interesting.  Being able to communicate in Hindi means you get so much more out a trip, rather than feeling you’ve just skimmed the surface of the country I feel as if I truly got to know the real India, or at least a little of it!

Now I’m getting deeper into my Hindi language learning ready for my next visit!
